The Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia offers a range of school holiday activities including supervised programs, canoe adventures and children's theatre. Activities will accommodate the weather and most will go ahead rain, hail or shine - bring your raincoat and gumboots!

Cool Creepy Crawlies: (4-7yrs) -

With more than one million species on the planet, you will have a busy morning exploring the insect world with our leaders.  Play games, be transformed into a beetle or butterfly. 

Please be sure to wear closed in shoes & bring a hat, morning tea & a bottle of water.

9 am – 12.30 pm, Monday, July 5 & 12.

$16 per Person

 

Wacky Wetland Tour :  Get wild and wacky and take a peek behind the scenes.  Learn more about wildlife on site, with hands on demonstrations with our wacky professor.  Please bring a hat, sunscreen, protective footwear, insect repellent, morning tea, lunch and a bottle of water.

Bird Beaks: (4-7yrs) -

The best Bird Beaks.  There are so many different types of bird beaks! Some are long & skinny, some are short & curved, other are like big spoons, which beaks are best?  See some birds draw some birds play some games and make a puppet.

 Please be sure to wear closed in shoes & bring a hat, morning tea & a bottle of water.

9 am – 12.30 pm, Wednesday, July 7 & 14.

Junior Wetlanders: (4-7yrs) -

Our experienced staffers will take your kids on adventures, with games, arts, crafts & exploration, guaranteed they will want more!

Photography Day: (7-12yrs)

Do your kids have an interest in Photography?  Hunter Region School of Photography leads the way with their expertise as they take us through the exciting world of photography and encourage a new generation of wildlife photographers!  Must bring your own camera, don’t forget a clear memory card & spare batteries.  Please be sure to wear closed in shoes & bring a hat, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea included.

8.30 am – 4.30 pm, Monday, July 5 & 12.

Adventure Day: (7-12yrs)              

For those kids who love getting out amongst the great outdoors – orienteering & canoeing with a twist!   Please be sure to wear closed in shoes & bring a hat, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea included.

8.30 am – 4.30 pm, Tuesday, July 6 & 13.

Art Day : (7-12yrs)  

Week One: Get out and about, learn to draw birds and animals, make a flip book and after lunch go crazy with the bird box relay. Whoever though learning to draw would be so much fun!

 

Week Two : patterns in nature rubbings, stamping ......  Experiment with things that are normally small (ants) are drawn huge and large things are drawn small. Please be sure to wear closed in shoes & bring a hat, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea included.

Suburban Hero’s: 10-14 Yrs

Want to be a hero & save the environment?  Why not start at the Hunter Wetlands Centre!  Meet some wildlife that you may have sharing your area & learn to attract more.  Learn about planting native plants from our Biodiversity Officer, & what it takes to create a healthy environment.  Then take on the exciting canoe challenge on the Iron Bark Creek in the afternoon. Please be sure to wear closed in shoes & bring a hat, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea included.

8.30 am – 4.30 pm, Thursday, July 8 & 15.

Flutterbies Art Program : (7-12yrs)  

Week One: Join our artist & observe & draw butterflies & other six legged creatures that fly. Create a mobile or wings to take home.  Then in the afternoon join in the Orienteering walk and collect rubbings & find objects to create a showpiece banner.

 

Week Two : Dragonflies are the insect of the day, create drawings & a mobile, join in the bird flying race.Please be sure to wear closed in shoes & bring a hat, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea included.

Theatre at the Wetlands

Shakespeare et al and the Wetlands Centre Shortland present an exciting school holiday program of original children’s theatre with limited seasons for schools offered in the last week of each school term.
The magical version of ‘Titania's Fairies’ will delight audiences in April. Shakespeare et al's delectible presentation of 'Hansel and Gretel' will enthrall  audiences in July and a new and exciting show 'The Frog Prince'  will envliven the wetlands in the September holidays.

July - Hansel & Gretel

Come and see this original adaptation of Brothers Grimm children’s story.  Our young heroes defy the odds and triumphantly survive the clutches of the unorthodox witch.  Don some winter woollies, venture out and get lost in the Wetlands with Hansel and Gretel as our roving production uncovers a few delightful surprises.
