Portraits of the Hunter

25 March - 20 April

Portraits of the Hunter - Hunter Wetlands Centre1

Portraits of the Hunter by Debra Spence

Statement from the Artist

I am a pastel artist living in Branxton in the Hunter Valley and my art journey began a few years ago when I decided to rediscover my childhood passion for drawing. A love of animals, especially birds, led me to concentrate on drawing and painting wildlife.

My style is realist and the medium I enjoy most is pastel. I have an obsession with detail and I find pastel enables me to create the subtle softness of fur and the intricate pattern of feathers as realistically as possible.

In this exhibition, my aim is to showcase the diversity of the wildlife of the Greater Hunter Valley region, from wetland and coastal birds to the fauna of the scrublands, farmlands and forests where I live. I also hope to show something of the life of the subject and the natural beauty of the area.

A special thank you to the talented photographers, who generously allowed their images to be used as reference.
