This April, our Artspace is hosting a joint exhibition by local artists Danny Giles and Andrew Marley. Each piece captures the fragility and resilience of Australia's native flora and fauna from the subtle, ethereal quality of Danny's pressed flowers on tissue paper to the vibrant brushstrokes of Andrew's fauna and forest scenes.
In Danny's collection of pressed flowers work, he explores themes of preservation and the ephemerality of life. "The process of pressing flowers in a book press not only preserves their beauty but also leaves a lasting memory - an embossing or mark that speaks to the flower’s former presence. This impression, a subtle yet poignant reminder, underscores the interconnectedness of memory and materiality."
Andrew's lifelong love of nature is challenged by his concern for its future. "My work relates to the fragile nature and the need to look after the environment. Birds, fish, insects and animals all are disappearing very quickly due to habitat loss and climate change. I hope my work contains a warning how fragile our natural world is, and the importance of looking after it for the next generation to enjoy."
The exhibition runs throughout April. All works are for sale and we encourage you to consider purchasing a piece for your home or office. With a portion of the sale price going back to the Hunter Wetlands Centre you'll be supporting local artists and nature conservation.
