Experience the rich biodiversity of the RAMSAR-listed Hunter Estuary as we glide through the mangrove-fringed Ironbark Creek and its tributaries on a small group guided kayak or canoe tour. This is a unique opportunity to visit parts of the Hunter that is only accessible by water!

Kayaking & Walking Tour - Astra Street Creek

On this small group tour we will be taking single-person kayaks on a tranquil paddle through the winding, mangrove-covered Astra Street Creek. As we keep an eye out for wetlands birdlife including egrets, kingfisher, osprey and species of waterfowl we will learn about the history and ecology of this unique environment and the conservation changes happening in the area. After refreshments in the rainforest we will continue the tour on foot through the rainforest and marshland.

This is an easy paddle suitable for all levels. Children 12+ can participate in a single person kayak if their guardian is also on the tour.

Duration: 2 hours (approx 1 hr paddle + 1hr walk).

Tickets: $40 per person.

Ironbark Creek

Experience the rich biodiversity of the RAMSAR-listed Hunter Estuary as we glide through the mangrove-fringed Ironbark Creek and its tributaries. Hear stories of the history and heritage of Ironbark Creek and Hexham Swamp area and the catchment's environmental changes over the decades. After refreshments in the rainforest we will continue our tour on foot through the wetlands. we will discuss wildlife conservation projects undertaken by the Hunter Wetlands Centre and how we propose to build a sustainable and resilient future. The Hunter Wetlands is home to almost 200 species of birds annually, including Egrets, Black-necked Storks, Osprey, kites, numerous waterfowl and bushbirds. The diversity of birdlife that frequents the land and waterways makes it one of the states most biodiverse areas and a birding hotspot. This is a unique opportunity to see a part of the wetlands only accessible by water.

Canoe Tours: Min age 5 years accompanied by adult guardian.

Kayak Tours: Suitable for 16+ with fitness level to paddle in tidal waters.

Suggested Duration: 2-4 hours

Boatman's Creek (1.5hrs)

Our Boatman's Creek Canoe Trail is a great introductory to the wetlands and canoeing/kayaking. After an introduction to paddling skills we will take to the water. Boatman's Creek is a tranquil meandering mangrove-fringed creek that is bursting with wildlife. As we keep an eye out for aquatic and birdlife including waterfowl, kingfishers and eels we'll  learning about the history and ecology of this unique environment and conservation changes happening in the area.

Easy paddle suitable for all levels. Children 5+ can join the tour provided they are accompanied at all times by a guardian in the same canoe.

Duration: 1.5 hours.

Canoe Tours: Min age 5 years accompanied by adult guardian.

Kayak Tours: Suitable for 10+ with adult guardian on tour.

Suggested Duration: 1.5 hours

Important Information

* Tickets: YOU MUST BOOK A TICKET FOR EACH PERSON. Tickets include HWCA Entrance Fee, Guided Tour, Kayak Hire, Equipment and Refreshments.

* Please arrive at the Visitors Centre 15mins prior to Tour start time.

* Prior paddling experience is not required, however you must have good general fitness for paddling and walking.

* Please advise any allergies or dietary requirements when booking.

* Life jackets will be provided and must be worn at all times while on the water.

* Children 5years-10years must be accompanied by a guardian at all times.
